Why isn't my number receiving calls?

Unlisted numbers are set up to receive calls by default. If you are expecting a call that isn't coming through, here are a few things you can try:

Is the other number supported?

Unlisted phone numbers can receive calls from any US or Canadian number. The country code for the United States and Canada is +1. Please make sure that the call you are expecting is from a supported number.

Please note that the +1 country code is also used by other North American countries that we do not support.

Do you have enough voice minutes?

If you are on an unlimited plan, you can skip this part. If you aren't though, please make sure you have voice minutes remaining. Credits are required to both make and receive calls.

How is your number configured for incoming calls?

Calling is enabled by default, but there is an option to disable calls or forward them elsewhere. Let's check that these settings are what you expect.

  1. Open the Number Options Menu. To do this, tap the top right button on the Calls screen (the main screen when you tap Calls on the bottom tab)
  2. Scroll down to Calls & Forwarding
  3. What is selected?
    1. Ring normally: Calls should ring to the phone you are on
    2. Go straight to voicemail: Calls won't ring on your phone. Rather, they will go straight to your Unlisted voicemail.
    3. Disable calls. Calls won't ring on your phone. Depending on the other carrier, the caller will receive a busy signal or out of service message
    4. Forward calls to "...": Incoming calls will ring on the phone number that is selected. You will receive a call from your Unlisted number. When you answer, you'll be prompted to tap a key to accept the call

Does your internet meet our minimum standard?

The default Ring normally setting uses a VoIP connection to connect your call. This is similar to Skype or Whatsapp, for example. However, VoIP calling does require a stable internet connection. Even if you have full strength, there might be various factors that can cause your call to fail. For example, your internet provider might block certain ports, route things in a non-standard way, or otherwise cause us trouble.

Try disabling robocall/spam blocking (if enabled)

If you have robocalling or spam blocking enabled in Unlisted, try disabling that. If we determine that a call is a robocall or spam call, it may get blocked before reaching you. To disable this setting, please see Enable Robocall Blocking.

Nothing worked so far?

There are two last things you can try.

  1. Restart the app. We know this is a punchline at this point, but it does reset the state of everything and often fixes issues like this.
  2. Use call forwarding instead of VoIP

Restarting the app

  1. Open the multitasking view. To do this on a phone with a home button, double tap the home button. On a phone with no home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, then keep holding down for a few seconds.
  2. From the multitasking view, swipe Unlisted up and off the top of the screen
  3. Wait a few seconds
  4. Re-open Unlisted

Enable call forwarding

This option will use your carrier's phone network instead of the VoIP data connection. The fact is that carriers have spent years building up the phone network and it is much more reliable than many internet providers. Though more reliable, the quality is lower. We prefer VoIP and use it as the default, but using your carrier network is a great alternative where necessary.

Here's how it will work: When you get a call to your Unlisted number, we'll dial the number that you configure. That number will then receive a call from your Unlisted number. When you answer, you'll be prompted to tap a key to accept the call. If you don't answer, or if you decline, then the caller will be returned to your Unlisted voicemail.

Here is how to enable call forwarding:

  1. Open the Number Options Menu. To do this, tap the top right button on the Calls screen (the main screen when you tap Calls on the bottom tab)
  2. Scroll down to Calls & Forwarding
  3. Select Forward calls to "<Your Number>". If you don't have this option:
    1. Tap Add a Forwarding Number
    2. Fill out the new forwarding number and give it a name (anything will do, it is just for you to identify it)
    3. Tap Save
    4. When you are back in the Calls & Forwarding section, make sure the number you just entered is selected
